1. “Abbott Elementary” — Season 4, Episode 2 “Ringworm”

“Abbott Elementary” opened strong with its Season 4 premiere, deftly setting up an unfamiliar landscape for Gregory (Tyler James Williams) and Janine (creator Quinta Brunson) after getting together over the summer. But it’s not until Episode 2 — regrettably and appropriately titled “Ringworm” — that the pair’s blossoming relationship comes under threat of some highly contagious fungal spores. The newly resolved will-they-won’t-they starts to itch just as this all-timer episode reveals itself to be exactly what you’d expect in the best light.
From the lice in “Bob’s Burgers” to the sexually transmitted diseases on “Glee,” every great sitcom involving a school demands an excellent outbreak episode. “Abbott Elementary” more than delivers, with the kids and teachers splitting into hyper-specific character-driven pandemonium that results in some of the sharpest lines in recent series memory. (“I shaved ABOVE THE KNEE!”)
As Gregory’s fear of catching ringworm comes between him and Janine, she instead teams up with Ava (Janelle James) in an odd couple misadventure that sees the educators desperately trying to gain control when acting uncharacteristically in-sync. While Ava tries to “run rings around worm” for The Atlantic… and declares Purge Day for her lawless, germ-infested students… Janine learns an important lesson about letting go. It all culminates in an exquisite act of bravery (two, really!) that almost makes all that passive discomfort you’ll feel seem sweet. —AF
