1. “A Man on the Inside” (Netflix)

For fans of Michael Schur’s pathos-informed comedy, you can’t do much better than “A Man on the Inside” (an IndieWire Critic’s Pick). Loosely based on the 2020 documentary “The Mole Agent,” the show follows recent widower Charles (Ted Danson), who responds to a newspaper ad seeking a retiree willing to go undercover at a nursing home to find the culprit behind some stolen jewelry. Things devolve from there.
The hijinks are fun, but it’s the melancholy center of the show when things get memorable. Schur and co. have painted a winning portrait about aging, and death, and what makes life worth living. The eight-episode first season sneaks up on you, but fans will quickly discover this care facility is full of people we’d happily spend seasons with. —ES
