“Private Life” (2018)

Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn both earned acclaim in 2018 for their searing work in Sundance dramedy “Private Life,” where they play a couple trying desperately for a child. Firmly in their middle-age years and not having luck doing it the natural way, the two begin navigating the complicated world of adoption and artificial insemination, a process that strains their relationship. Like a lot of Sundance dramedies, “Private Life” is a small, intimate affair, but Hahn and Giamatti’s great performances are well worth celebrating. —WC
