Organized by the Television Academy, the Emmy Awards, or Emmys, are considered the highest honor for someone in the TV industry to receive. Taking place in September each year, the Primetime Emmys award the best of what premiered within the most recent TV season, which runs from June 1 through May 31 the following year.
The 2024 Emmy Awards will take place Sunday September 15 at 8:00pm ET/5:00pm PT at Los Angeles’s Peacock Theater, part of the L.A. Live complex. These 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will be hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy and will air on ABC. You can also watch the 2024 Emmys on abc.com, Hulu+ live TV, Sling TV, or YouTube TV, as well as the ABC app.
‘Shogun’ is the leading contender for the Outstanding Drama Series at the 76th Primetime Emmys, having already won 14 awards at the Creative Arts Emmys, which took place September 7-8. Overall, it received a whopping 25 nominations. ‘The Bear’ is the leading contender for Outstanding Comedy Series, having broken the record for most nominations for a Comedy series ever with 23, in recognition of the Chicago-set kitchen series’ universally beloved second season. It already won seven awards at the Creative Arts Emmys, including Guest Actor wins for Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis. Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series is far more of a tossup, with the category likely being a horserace between two Netflix series: The popular sensation ‘Baby Reindeer’ and the well-mounted ‘Ripley.’
The standard cycle of voting begins in March with different shows hosting For Your Consideration events to present their project to voters that may not have caught up on it yet. Then, in mid-June, nominations voting opens up to determine which shows will be recognized when the official Emmy nominations are announced in mid-July. Afterwards, the nominees have more than a month to campaign, with final Emmys voting opening in mid-August, and closing by the end of the month. Afterwards, there are the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which host all the craft, animation, documentary, and short form categories. Finally, the Primetime Emmy Awards happen a week later.
One thing to note about the annual Primetime Emmys telecast is that the rights to air the awards show cycle between the four broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC,) each year. That said, regardless of which network airs it, the Primetime Emmys itself always happen in person at one of the theaters at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles.
