18 HBO Original Series to Get Excited About in 2025

With hotly anticipated debut series and long-awaited returning shows, HBO's 2025 lineup offers something for everyone — especially anyone craving a little originality in their original programs.

The I.P.-ification of television has come for HBO, although not at the same gluttonous levels seen at other networks. New HBO original series in 2025 will include a prequel to the hit film franchise, “It” (via the ominous title “Welcome to Derry”), the latest “Game of Thrones” spinoff “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” and various DC superhero extensions, the latter of which is still housed under the Max originals branding.

But for how long? Last year saw a slew of high-profile programs shift brands, as “The Penguin” and “Dune: Prophecy” both launched under the HBO banner after first being developed behind the thin wall separating one of television’s most prestigious networks from its latest streaming home. “Welcome to Derry” crossed over from Max, too, as did anticipated titles being prepped for next year: namely, the untitled “Harry Potter” series and DC’s Green Lantern show, “Lanterns.” Where once delineation was seen as a necessary means to preserve HBO’s brand integrity, now the small screen powerhouse is embracing a “bigger is better” mentality.

And yet, despite how necessary it seems these days for a streaming service to cater to the masses, HBO’s 2025 lineup offers far more original series than “original” series. Rather than force “Mare of Easttown” Season 2 on the air before it’s ready, HBO invested in creator Brad Ingelsby’s next new idea: “Task,” which is, admittedly, a cop show set in Pennsylvania, but it’s still a new cop show set in Pennsylvania. Then there’s “Duster,” a period-action series based on an original script from J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, and a trio of comedies from one-of-a-kind minds: Tim Robinson’s “The Chair Company,” Rachel Sennott’s untitled show, and Nathan Fielder’s “The Rehearsal” Season 2.

None of these are programs that get green-lit because an audience is “guaranteed.” They’re generated the old-fashioned way: by developing talent and trusting in their abilities. Soon, it will be up to us, the viewers, to do the same — rewarding the network’s faith in ingenuity over familiarity. After all, if there’s enough demand for unprecedented ideas, maybe the tide will turn back in their favor, and instead of talking about how I.P. finally came for HBO, we’ll be talking about how HBO resisted the temporary trend of too much I.P.

Below are the 18 HBO series we’re excited to see in 2025, based on what’s been announced by the network and a touch of IndieWire’s own reporting. The story will be updated with release dates as they’re announced, as well as relevant news tied to each release, so circle back throughout the year to keep tabs on what’s coming. It should be a good year for Max subscribers, whether you’re waiting for the next blockbuster or craving something you’ve never even thought to want.
