January 2025 TV Preview: 10 New Shows to Watch

1. “Missing You” (January 1, Netflix)

Detective Kat Donovan (Rosalind Eleazar) hasn’t been the same since her fiancé Josh (Ashley Walters) disappeared eleven years ago — and now his face is on a dating appturning her world upside down. Not only does it plunge Kat back into the pain and confusion of his disappearance, but resurfaces questions about her own father’s murder and more unanswered questions peppering her past. Harlan Coben will adapt the series based on his own novel after previous Netflix collaborations “Stay Close,” “Fool Me Once,” and “The Stranger.”

2. “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth” (January 2, Peacock)

Colin Firth plays Dr. Jim Swire in this U.K. series about the aftermath of Pan Am Flight 103, which exploded on December 21, 1988, killing nearly 300 people over the Scottish town of Lockerbie — including Jim’s daughter. He begins a journey to seek justice for her and for families of other victims, a mission which spans counties, countries, and continents in search of a justice Jim may never find.

The show is based on Swire’s own book, adapted by executive producer David Harrower and guest writer Maryam Hamidi, with directors Otto Bathurst and Jim Loach. Also starring Catherine McCormack, Ardalan Esmaili, Sam Troughton, Claire Brown, Jemma Carlton, Harry Redding, Nabil Alraee, Yousseff Kerkour, Mark Bonnar, Michael Landes.

3. “Going Dutch” (January 2, Fox)

U.S. Army Colonel Patrick Quinn (Denis Leary) gets reassigned to the Netherlands after his famously loud mouth gets him in trouble, and ends up at “the least important army base in the world” — one better known for its amenities than its discipline. The Colonel hopes to change that, but it’ll take more than shouting orders for this group to turn things around, especially with its previous leader — his daughter — still around. Also starring Taylor Misiak, Danny Pudi, Laci Mosely, and Hal Cumpston, with Joel Church-Cooper as writer, showrunner, and executive producer.

4. “American Primeval” (January 9, Netflix)

You know the phrase “It’s like the Wild West out there?” This Netflix limited series from Peter Berg, Mark L. Smith, and Eric Newman depicts that era for all its violent lawlessness. Betty Gilpin stars as Sara, a woman with a secret who’s trying to cross the country but needs a guide for herself and her son Devin (Preston Mota). Their paths cross with the mysterious recluse Isaac, who’s more interested in staying alive than helping anyone, but whose survival quickly becomes intertwined with the duo’s. Also starring Kim Coates, Jai Courtney, Dane DeHaan, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Shawnee Pourier, and more.

5. “The Pitt” (January 9, Max)

Noah Wyle is back behind hospital doors in this high-stakes medical drama from writer and executive producer R. Scott Gemmill. Each episode unfolds in real time as one hour of Dr. Robby’s (Wyle) emergency room shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital (“The Pitt”). Also starring Tracey Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez, and Katherine LaNasa. 

6. “Goosebumps: The Vanishing” (January 10, Disney+)

David Schwimmer plays a divorced dad in the latest telling of R.L. Stine’s spooky novels, but the focus is of course on his kids. Devin (Sam McCarthy) and Cece (Jayden Bartels) are adjusting to life with Anthony (Schwimmer) when they stumble upon something they shouldn’t (as the teens in “Goosebumps” usually tend to). Soon, the siblings and their friends go too deep and end up caught in the case of four teenagers who went missing in 1994 — if that’s even what really happened. Developed by Nicholas Stoller and Rob Letterman, with Hilary Winston serving as showrunner.

7. “Prime Target” (January 22, Apple TV+)

Math genius Edward Brooks (Leo Woodall) is on the verge of a breakthrough that could unlock every computer on Earth — which naturally makes him a prime target for all kinds of hidden enemies. NSA agent Taylah Sanders (Quintessa Swindell) is tasked with observing Edward and monitoring his safety, and together they start to unravel the tangled web he’s caught in. The series from creator Steve Thompson also stars Stephen Rea, David Morrissey, Martha Plimpton, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Jason Flemyng, Harry Lloyd, Ali Suliman, Fra Fee, and Joseph Mydell, with Bray Hood directing and Ridley Scott among the executive producers.

8. “Watson” (January 26, CBS)

Six months after Sherlock Holmes is killed by Moriarty, John Watson (Morris Chestnut) is still not himself, even as he returns to practicing medicine and the vestiges of his life before Holmes. But with Moriarty still at large, how far behind can John leave the past? CBS describes “Watson” as “a medical show with a strong investigative spine, featuring a modern version of one of history’s greatest detectives as he turns his attention from solving crimes to solving medical mysteries.” Also starring Eve Harlow, Peter Mark Kendall, Ritchie Coster, Inga Schlingmann, and Rochelle Aytes, from creator and executive producer Craig Sweeny.

9. “Paradise” (January 28, Hulu)

All is not well in paradise, where Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) is suspected of killing President Cal Bradford (James Marsden) because he was the last one to see him alive. There’s plenty of mystery surrounding the new thriller from Dan Fogelman, who’s known for his shocking twists, and the trailer shows Xavier being briefed on highly-classified information before President Bradford’s death — and being encouraged to lie while giving his statements. Also starring Julianne Nicholson, Sarah Shahi, Nicole Brydon Bloom, Aliyah Mastin and Percy Daggs IV.

10. “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” (January 29, Disney+)

This animated series catches up with the character in high school under the guidance of head writer Jeff Trammell and supervising director Mel Zwyer — with visuals deliberately evoke Spider-Man’s comic book roots. The series stars Hudson Thames, Colman Domingo, Eugene Byrd, Grace Song, Zeno Robinson, Hugh Dancy, Charlie Cox and will debut in weekly installments.
